Density and porosity of the board decide the filler load. A coarse particleboard edge takes more material than a fine MDF edge.
Apply in one pass
Use a ready-to-use filler with body, the filler must bridge pores without slumping. Avoid systems that shrink back into the edge during drying.
Dry without shrinkage
Shrinkage is the classic edge failure: the profile looks filled, then sinks. A non-shrinking filler makes the second pass unnecessary.
Sand and finish
The filled edge must sand flush with the board and take the coating with the same gloss as the face. Adhesion of the finish to the filler is as important as adhesion of the filler to the board.
Why fills fail

Break-out
